ZaGovor – Repository of Protected Dialects in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia
SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM
The ZaGovor project involves the development of a digital interface — a repository — designed to document and present linguistic phenomena listed in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia.
This interface is the result of two decades of research on dialects as elements of intangible cultural heritage. It will provide verified information (linguistic, ethnological, and cultural) about each individual cultural asset, its bearers, and the activities undertaken since its inscription, thereby ensuring that this segment of heritage is preserved, revitalized, and branded as an important identity marker of each local community.
Selected holders of cultural heritage elements will also participate as co-creators of the platform.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The main goal of the ZaGovor project is to develop a digital interface that will document and present linguistic phenomena inscribed in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia. The interface will contain linguistic and documentation–administrative data on each heritage element, as well as audio and video recordings and records of activities carried out since its inscription in the Register.
All project activities will be implemented in cooperation with the heritage bearers in the field.
By creating a repository of protected dialects included in the Register, all linguistic and cultural diversity of Croatia will be brought together in one place, while also confirming the interconnectedness of Croatian dialects — which is greater than previously assumed. From the dialects of Hum na Sutli, Bednja, and Žminj (inscribed in 2007) to the Bunjevac dialects inscribed in 2021, Croatia has — through the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Media — built a globally representative system for safeguarding local dialects (both Croatian and non-Croatian), based on solid linguistic and ethnological–anthropological criteria.
The time has come for this system to be presented digitally, enabling greater cooperation among local communities, an accessible way for users to explore linguistic diversity, and a valuable research source for experts. In this way, linguistic heritage is presented in a modern format while also establishing a national network of heritage bearers and researchers.
The repository will be connected with other verified online resources of intangible cultural heritage.
Once developed, the database and website will serve as a permanent digital place for storing, documenting, and monitoring intangible linguistic cultural heritage.
An additional value of the future program is that each local community will participate as a co-creator of the platform.
